Muted Songs on TikTokers Content as UMG Pulled Out from TikTok
SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The world's largest music company, Universal Music Group (UMG)on Thursday (1/30) announced their plans to withdraw its songs from TikTok after failing to reach a new licensing deal.
UMG, in an open letter to artists and songwriters, mentioned that their contract with TikTok expired on January 31. In their contract renewal negotiations, UMG mentioned that they brought up several key issues such as fair compensation for artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from AI’s harmful effects, and online safety for TikTok users. UMG also accused TikTok of intimidation during contract negotiations.
In response, TikTok issued a statement on the same day saying that UMG put its greed above the interests of singers and songwriters.
As a result of this incident, many popular songs can no longer be used on TikTok, such as Taylor Swift’s songs. Many TikTok videos that were previously accompanied by songs are now silent.
